Sulphur, Compost, Mulch and Lawn Fertilizer

Winter 2020 Garden Prep

Pull all weeds from the bed, including the roots, to prevent them from taking over the bed in spring. Remove garden debris that might harbor insects or diseases that could attack your new plants in spring.

Use sulfur to lower the soil pH. Spread the sulfur over the surface of the garden bed and work it into the top 12 inches of soil. Sulfur requires about three months to alter the pH, so fall application works best. New Castle Gardens carries sulfur in 4# and 50# bags.

Spread compost over the surface of the bed. Apply it in a 2-4″ thick layer. Compost improves soil moisture retention and drainage, while also improving the texture of sandy or clay soil. Mix the compost into the top 6 to 8 inches of soil with the spade or tiller. New Castle Gardens will be using Black Gold OMRI Garden Compost this year.

Cover the bed with a 2-3″ layer of mulch. Mulch prevents weeds from invading the dormant bed during winter. New Castle Gardens has multiple bark mulches available. We also have 5 cubic yard bales of natural red cedar gorilla mulch for larger projects.

Now is the time to feed your lawn for winter. We use natural, organic-based Pro-Rich Turf Food. This is an all season food. It does not contain any chemicals that can harm children or pets
