Soils 101

Does your soil look like this?

We can help you make it look like this.

If you would like a basic soil analysis, get a mason jar, fill it ~1/3 full of your soil and add distilled water (not home or irrigation water) to the top. Shake it vigorously and let it sit for undisturbed for 24-48 hours and bring it with you!

Living soil is healthy soil. We have natural and organic products in stock that will do wonders for the quality of your soil. Healthy soil means happy, healthy plants.
Class starts at 10 a.m. Sat 4/7/18. FREE!

Early Seeding

Now is the time to plant many seed varieties, both flowers and vegetables. We’ll get our hands in the soil and plant some this Saturday! We have lot’s of great seeds available from Botanical Interests, a Colorado based company.

Lawn Aeration and Fertilization

A great way to remember to fertilize your lawn is using holidays! Feed you your lawn on Easter, Memorial Day, the 4th of July, and Labor Day. Easter just passed and we have an excellent product in for your lawns! If you did not get your lawn aerated this year, make sure to do it next year. Mike Cox has done our yard the last 2 years and it improves the soil, decreases the amount of water you need to use, and improves the overall health of your grass. You can find Mike Cox on Facebook under Mike & Kasey Cox LLC.

Help Save the Bees

We just had 2 swarm hives installed by local bee expert Mark Burrows. We aren’t ready to take on bee keeping, but hope to catch a swarm or 2 that Mark will then re-home. Below is some info from Mark and his contact information.

It’s spring and that means it’s time for the bees to get busy and make more brood so they can have plenty of workers to gather all of the nectar that appears all around us. This also means Swarms! Regardless of what Hollywood would have you believe swarms are when bees are at their most docile. You may hear them coming before you see them as they are quite loud as they move across the landscape to look for a new home.

If you spot one around your house or around people, do not be alarmed, they are just moving through and will be gone quickly. They may alight upon a branch nearby and “hang out” till the scout bees find a proper home and then move on. Leave them be, they will not attack you unless provoked (just like most people) and are just wanting to find a new place to live. If this is a major concern to you feel free to call me and I’ll remove them for you.

As part of this process, the bees may decide that the eve of a house or outbuilding may be an appropriate place to move into. While they do no damage to the house you probably don’t want bees in such close proximity. Call me and I can remove them for you.

Lastly, the single most important thing you can do to help the dwindling bee population is to not spray pesticides in and around your home or garden, Dandelions are the bees first real nectar and pollen source and are quite nutritious. The’ll be pretty hungry coming out of a long flowerless winter, so please leave those little dots of sunshine for the bees to get their first spring meal and put off the first mowing for a few weeks if possible.

May your summer be as bright as a jar of honey!

Bugs, Birds, Bees, and Butterflies

Your Pollinators and Beneficial Bugs need a home in your garden! Our Beneficial Bug Hotels are a fun and practical addition to your home garden. They are perfect for kids to learn about organic farming, predatory insects, and pollinators. The hotels harbor beneficial bugs that keep insects such as aphids off our plants. Pollinators use the hotels to develop from egg to adulthood, where they can facilitate the reproduction of flowering plants! Help host these essential species right in your garden!

Your Pollinators need a healthy food source. We have lots of host plant and nectar plant seeds in stock.

We have some gorgeous hummingbird feeders in stock. Provide them a food source while you are waiting for your flowers to bloom. Don’t waste your money on the unhealthy red-dyed food. Here is a simple recipe to make your own hummingbird nectar:

Directions for making safe hummingbird food:
Mix 1 part sugar with 4 parts water and bring to a boil to kill any bacteria or mold present.
Cool and fill feeder.
Extra sugar water may be stored in a refrigerator.
Red dye should not be added.

Don’t forget about the other birds. Many of them are seed eaters.
